Jim:

I'm inclined to believe our usage would be categorized as enterprise use
rather than individual personal use as defined by Oracle. Meaning Oracle
updates will no longer be provided after January 2019 without a maintenance
subscription of some sort. Not so far off.

I surmise from elsewhere in this forum that IBM is working on an alternate
jvm. Or will embed the jvm within their products at some point in the
future. Just haven't noticed any official statement from the IBM i
executive team about their direction, now that Oracle is taking java to a
different business model.

All this driven from the java update I installed this morning.

java release_notice <https://java.com/en/download/release_notice.jsp>

Since IBM plans to support ACS with a more recent version of Java, my
understanding is it will move along with the Java versions. Note that the
end of public updates for Java 8 is 12/2020, so that's a long way off,
certainly beyond this budget cycle.
