I don't disagree that there is a chasm Booth.
But the programmers you identify are every bit as disinterested in exploiting "new" 5250 features as they are web interfaces.
More importantly the USERS aren't interested. And frankly nor should they be! They use smart phones and GPS and DVRs and ... every day of their lives - why one earth would they be interested in green screens that so severally limit what can be done? Sure there are a few users for whom the green screen is useful as-is - but they are the same people who would have no use for scroll bars, meese, or any "modern" 5250 add-ons.
I strongly disagree that learning new things is easy for all of us - and I'm a lot older than most in this list. I struggle to learn new technologies every day - but I'm damned if I will retreat into my cave and go back to 5250 programming.
