Thanks Nadir for the explanation.
We are getting pretty excited (at least I am)
about going to 7.3 with new Power 9 boxes.
We just wanted to understand all the
possibilities of what could go bad and
I think we've covered most of the issues
as far as 7.1.
Also, I think you're right about lowest
possible Java being used even though
I left Java 5 on the system.
I think that this environment argument has something
to do with how it starts:
/QIBM/ProdData/os/Service/Java/qpdetmon.jar:
It appears to have changed after putting Java6
back on.
Thanks again!

Hi Bill,
ADMIN3 is running old runtime so we disabled it. We can not upgrade it to
latest runtime in IBM i 7.1 and IBM i 7.2 because it may still be used by
customers who have installed Access for Web on Admin3. In IBM i 7.3 ADMIN3
runs latest runtime.
Not sure about service monitor. Probably starts searching from lowest
supported JRE and goes up.

Nadir,
I took your advice and brought HTTP up to level 53 for PTF's.
Having removed Java 6 and restarting the system brought
everything to at least Java 7 (home) and those that we forced to Java 8
as expected.
Then I got a little curious and put Java 6 back on, reapplied PTFs
and restarted the system. The service monitor went back to 6!
Everything else stayed the same (7&8) and ADMIN3 went away.
Interesting but not fatal I suppose.
