If you are going to get a new HMC then I strongly recommend either going
with a Power system based HMC, or getting a virtual HMC. The x86 based
HMC's have all had their EOS dates announced.

It's not the version of IBMi which kills HMC. It's the firmware of your
system. You can check that with your existing HMC, or by DSPFMWSTS. If
you have an HMC then DSPFMWSTS had better show
Firmware update policy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *HMC
Or you can really set yourself up for a serious hosing. Although it
doesn't seem to be such an issue (yet) with your particular P7.

Our firmware is HMC controlled. We have the HMC at V7R7.9.0, Service Pack 3. Last ESU was MH01699 5/22/2017. Based on my last look, this is the last patch I can apply to this particular HMC. That in turn means that the installed FW770.41 (092) is the latest firmware level I can load.

I like having an HMC that is independent of the i's power state. Nothing like being able to power down/power up a box remotely. I wasn't aware that physical HMCs were already on their way out. Looks like my option is to look at a VMWare virtual HMC. Thanks for that heads up.
