Proxy commands would be what I was thinking about. If it changes the base command, it won't work for me in this case.

Keep in mind that you can do
Create Proxy Command (CRTPRXCMD)
and you can do CHGCMD against this new proxy command, HOWEVER, any changes you make there are change in the physical command itself. For example if I do

CRTPRXCMD CMD(QTEMP/KISSOFF) TGTCMD(SIGNOFF) CHGCMDDFT CMD(QTEMP/KISSOFF) NEWDFT('LOG(*LIST)')

Then I've also changed the defaults on SIGNOFF and not just KISSOFF.

WRKOBJ OFF
Object Type Library Attribute
OFF *CMD QUSRSYS PRX

Notice the Attribute column?

DSPCMD OFF
...
Current proxy chain . . . . . . . . . : QUSRSYS/OFF
QSYS/SIGNOFF

Nice thing about this is if the vendor of the command puts a new version out there in PRODLIB and you have a proxy command in QGPL you automatically have the new parameters, etc. Very useful for that, and for renames, etc. Not so good when you want customized defaults.
Much better than copying the command into QGPL and forgetting to update it when you put on a new vendor version.

Proxy commands are very similar to
ADDLNK OBJ('/ThisDirectory')
NEWLNK('/home/ROB/ThisDirectory')
LNKTYPE(*SYMBOLIC)
