Forget about using the web interface to open a VIOS console session.
Because of Java it’s really flaky and prone to disconnect.
What you need to do is open Putty session to your HMC, login with hscroot and then use VTMENU command to open the virtual terminal menu.
Then you need to select your server, depending on how many are managed by that HMC and then select the VIOS you need to manage.

Subject: VIOS Console session

Ok, I know that you can use a putty client to go to your VIOS lpar and get
a session. But that's not really the way to go if you're going to disrupt
TCP/IP by stopping/starting the system, changing the IP address, etc.

I know that you can either physically use your HMC, or use a KVM, and get
a console session that way. And that's good.

I thought that you used to be able to go to https://yourhmc and open a
VIOS console session that way. However whenever I try that a tab opens on
my console which says "Open Terminal Window". If I click on that tab I
only get:
Unable to Switch Tasks
The task you want to switch to is an applet based task, which does not
support 'Switch To'. Please use the window switching capabilities for
local windows to 'Switch To' the window for this task.

Ok, if I use IE I can get it to work. I just have to answer the pop ups
right.

I must have something configured wrong in Chrome. If anyone can tell me
what, I'd appreciate it.
Same issue with Edge.
Same issue with FF.
