He is what it appears to me:
On the Hosting LPAR you have a virtual SERVER SCSI adapter and associated Network server that is sharing your virtual optical device.
On the Client LPAR you have a virtual Client SCSI adapter assigned that ties back the virtual Server SCSI.

Take a look at the config for each partition on the HMC and validate that the virtual CLIENT SCSI adapter is tagged as your alternate restart device.

If this high level does not provide enough depth and can send some additional detail.

Nope. There are no physical DVD's loaded on the system at all.

OPT04 on the guest only shows content when VRTOPT01, on the management partition, has an associated image catalog loaded.

I've already used the VRTOPT01 / OPT04 to load the latest CUME PTF package's on other partitions and it worked fine.

FWIW: When I load an image catalog on the management partition, OPT04 shows up on ALL guest partitions (we have 4 guests) with the same content.

Here's what our support partition is showing in WRKOPTVOL currently ...

"dynamic partitioning" sounds like what you'll need to do.

We have 4 partitions and 1 External RDX tape drive

Someone else set the device up and is no longer available.

Device description . . . . . . . . : TAP01

Option . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *BASIC

Category of device . . . . . . . . : *OPT

Device type . . . . . . . . . . . : 63B8

Device model . . . . . . . . . . . : 0D2

Resource name . . . . . . . . . . : RMS01

Local internet address . . . . . . : *NONE

I was told we should be able to use the RDX tape drive on all partitions but it can only be varied on on a single partition at a time.

How can a single external RDX drive be used over multiple partitions?

Power8 running 7.2

It works fine on our main partition.

But when I vary it off then go to another partition it will not vary on

Error:

Message ID . . . . . . : CPD27D2 Severity . . . . . . . : 40

Message type . . . . . : Diagnostic

Date sent . . . . . . : 03/22/18 Time sent . . . . . . :

Message . . . . : Device TAP01 vary on failed.

Cause . . . . . : The device resource is currently in use by object
RMS01

type *DEVD. If the object name and type are blanks, either the resource is

in use by the Dedicated Service Tools (DST), another client, or the data is

not available.

If a media library drive is being allocated, either the drive may already

be allocated to another media library device that is varied on or the drive

may be in use through an alternate path.

Recovery . . . : Do one of the following:

-- Vary off the active device and vary on device TAP01.

-- Use the active device instead of device TAP01.

-- Deallocate the device on Network Server RMS01.

That suggests that the user of the API must be the same user as the Job that is using QTEMP, or a *SECADM who has the authority to set his own Job's user identity to match that of the other Job.

Disk encryption is not going to stop a security administrator from accessing sensitive information. Disk encryption is intended for the event that your disks drives are physically lifted and stolen.
