We're still on 7.1. I can confirm that the examples in your OP won't work
on our box, but
select dec(varchar_format(
timestamp_iso(current_date), 'YYYYMMDD'),8,0)
from sysibm.sysdummy1
does work.

and not a date, such as...

At least I found this through some googling which solved the problem for
one person on 7.1.

If anyone can confirm this it would be appreciated.
