Thx Rob - i think i narrowed it down to we are on 7.2 and client is 7.1 or
less...

in 7.1 or less, I believe the answer is to refer to a timestamp initially
and not a date, such as...

select dec(varchar_format(
timestamp_iso(current_date), 'YYYYMMDD'),8,0)
from sysibm.sysdummy1

At least I found this through some googling which solved the problem for
one person on 7.1.

If anyone can confirm this it would be appreciated.

Immediate thoughts:
1 - Different versions of IBM i
2 - Different PTF levels
3 - You're trying to simplify this to explain it to us and the customer
box isn't really using current date but a select from a file and they have
invalid data?
4 - Date formats of session attributes. However I think that the point of
this function is to not have to deal with that.

Subject: varchar_format illegal on customer box?
Sent by: "MIDRANGE-L" <midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Trying to figure out why the below statements works fine in embedded sql
on
our development box but not for our customer?

select dec(varchar_format(current_date, 'YYYYMMDD'),8,0)

from sysibm.sysdummy1

and

select dec(varchar_format(current_date, 'MMDDYYYY'),8,0)

from sysibm.sysdummy1

and

select dec(varchar_format(current_timestamp, 'HHMM'),4,0)

from sysibm.sysdummy1

On customer box, the joblog shows...

Argument 1 of function VARCHAR_FORMAT not valid.
DECIMAL use not valid.

Any ideas?
