Pete,

+1 on the planning , reading, prep, and testing.
I probably spent 100 hours.
Upgrade was less than 1 hour.
Almost flawless.

Paul

Paul has provided you with some great links, and now you must read the books and understand what you are doing. Upgrades are all about planning, if you do the planning up front, they are easy and will be done right. If you expect a magic wand, you are going to be *SCREWED.

You will need at least the three links below.

V7R3 Memo to USers
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzaq9/rzaq9.pdf?view=kc
V7R2 Memo to users
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzaq9/rzaq9printme.htm
Installing, upgrading, or deleting IBM i and related software https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzahc/rzahc1.htm

How long depends on many variables.
If need to limit your down window, consider building a combined V7R3 OS / PTF image.

I just finished the entire process, multiple LPARS.
