Actually, no, I was referring to Subject Alternative Names.
I don't know enough about them, or about the SAN policies of various
CAs, to say whether or not they're required to be subdomains of a common
higher-level domain. But I do know that some of the CAs used by our
customers add complimentary SANs for certain trivial variations on the
domain for which the cert was purchased.
