Midrange modernization will extend the IBM i a lot more persuasively if the
lipstick on the pig, that is, the web interface to rejuvenated legacy
applications, is running on cheaper platforms and drawing up the IBM i for
data.

I'm all for PASE and GCC/Perl/Python running natively, etc., but let IBM i
do what it does best and Linux do what it does best.

You can edit IFS files from the workstation with jEdit. If you try it, it's
obviously the best way to do that sort of thing short of paying for RDi.

jEdit would run from the IBM i ... I've run Java windows via Xwindows ...
Showed Ublu running in an IBM i Xwindow at COMMON last fall .. but why
waste resources that way, it's cheaper to integrate Linux and IBM i rather
than torture one's self and warp the business case to run all these
wonderful tools directly on the IBM i.

If you used Norton Commander back in the day you probably remember
this DOS utility with a side-by-side directory list.

It saved my life back in the early days of PCs.

I discovered Midnite Commander a few years ago which functions as a
functional equivalent to Norton Commander in Linux.

There is also an AIX version so now that I have SSH working I thought
I would give it a try.

It appears to work just fine. Very cool.

This will be useful addition when doing command line work via putty.

If you're using SSH and Putty to access the IBMi remotely check it out.
