LTO3 drive can read nothing higher than LTO3 cartridge. Can read LTO2 but
not write. Can't touch a LTO1 cartridge. You really don't want LTO3. I
don't think they're compatible with newer servers.
LTO4 drive. Weird. Cannot read LTO5 but can read LTO6. Can read down to
LTO2. Can write down to LTO3. Too many people with LTO5, so my
recommendation is to stay away from 4.
LTO5 drive. Can read LTO6. Can read down to LTO3. Can write down to
LTO4.
LTO6 drive. R/W 5,6 only. Can read down to LTO4.

For someone like James I think I'd go with the LTO5.
