I had a double major in Business and Economics from the University of
Minnesota, but because of the money, I was running a bulldozer in the good
weather, and an 18 wheeler in the winter. Through an acquaintance, I was
offered an opportunity to learn how to be a programmer. That was way back in
the fall of 1973 at the IBM office in Minneapolis. 6 weeks later, I was
handed RPG 2 coding sheets and a stack of printer layout charts, and away I
went!

I still have a CDL and an Operating Engineers union card, in case this IT
thing doesn't work out for me.

Maybe it is just me - but I don't think I ever met anybody who started way
back who wasn't somewhat of a tech geek. The ones who jumped on the
bandwagon to make money (1990s) less so.

But your mileage may vary.

That assumes the old-fashioned devs were ever tech geeks.

I've heard the same thing from many customers.

It is a problem we have had for many years now. We wrote this blog post
back in 2012 that speaks to our experience at the
bank.http://ibmsystemsmag.com/ibmi/developer/modernization/perception_attitu

Perception is _everything_.
