You need to verify if it works in newer releases.  Erasing the data is
better for security, if they do it now, you can not undelete any more.

Ours is a custom version of Dave's UNDEL2, and given that I know of nothing else that can undelete DB2/400 records, I'm reasonably certain that DBU's undelete is at least derived from UNDEL2.

Because UNDEL2, in order to function, has to briefly obtain an exclusive lock on the entire file.
