This is the client who is still on V7R1, and wants to stay at least a year
behind IBM on service packs.

The knucklehead who is "in charge" is asking for confirmation from IBM that
he'll still be able to get parts, even though I told him that the
announcement clearly states that IBM may or may not provide support.

His 2018 budget already includes paying for extended support for V7R1 after
next April. He's a former IBM Global Services consultant, so it should come
as no surprise that people refer to him as the resident post turtle.

Subject: RE: IBM announces end of service dates (nomore maintenance)
forvarious Power 6 and Power 7 platforms.

Why would they keep them around? Why not sell them to some third party
maintenance for .05 on the dollar and say if you want the business go for
it? Why keep inventory for stuff you do not even want to maintain?
They may have a "best effort" time and material contract (and contract is
using the term loosely) available but even that would say you're going to
pay for that part at whatever value that person wants to charge IBM for it
(and maybe a little markup for IBM also).
And since it's "best effort" that effort may not include exhausting all
efforts to locate a part.
