Is RLA portable to other languages and platforms? Can I copy and paste the RLA code from an RPG program into say a Java, C#, Python, etc program? No.
But, I can copy and paste SQL from within an RPG program and get the same data back in a Java, C#, Python, or a reporting tool (like crystal reports or SSRS).
Setting all other issues aside that should persuade you to never use RLA again. It's too proprietary.
Would you rather make an attempt at writing more portable code for the inevitable future migration to other languages or would you like to make that process harder by doing it via RLA?

That type of attitude is just about as ignorant as the one held by some legacy developers who wouldn't touch SQL with a 10 foot pole. I'm just saying that there are valid use cases for SQL, and that there just as valid use cases for RLA. Pick the right tool for the job.
