Sorry Alan!

It works with the CLOB(2M) that I tested with. I did not understand that the datatype was XML, that is probably the difference that is killing it.

If I find time, I'll try a couple of other things and see if there is a way around it.

Thanks for your reply Steve
I tried what you wrote - but it failed with CAST from XML to CHARACTER not supported.
When I F1 on this message, this is displayed

Additional Message Information

Message ID . . . . . . : SQL0461 Severity . . . . . . . : 30
Message type . . . . . : Diagnostic

Message . . . . : CAST from XML to CHARACTER not supported.
Cause . . . . . : CAST is not supported from data type XML to data type
CHARACTER. If the CAST is from date, time, or timestamp to character, the
length of the character result is too small.
Recovery . . . : Change the result data type or length to one that is
supported for the CAST function or change the expression to have a data type
that can be cast to CHARACTER. Try the request again.

Alan,

You can also cast the column as a varchar() with a known length. The issue is that the pointer needs to be resolved into a data type that STRSQL can digest and there are limits with the size you can get away with.

Example:
SELECT
Cast(XMLROW(PCAT as "Catalogie_code", PPRICE as "Price", PSUFFX as "Suffix", PSKUNO as "Product_Nbr") as varchar(2500)) AS XML_ROW FROM hbmofa.pricep

STRSQL is not enhanced to display any enhancements since release V5R3.
You need to execute your SQL Statement with either Client Access - i Navigator - Run SQL Scripts or ACS (Access Client Solutions) - Run SQL Scripts.

Subject: Jumping into XML on the AS/400

Hi everyone
Before I forget - we are on v7r1

Things are relatively quiet at the moment, so I am trying to take advantage of that to learn new things - well - new to me anyway So I am looking into XML I have a physical file that I attempted the following SQL on

SELECT
XMLROW(PCAT as "Catalogie_code", PPRICE as "Price", PSUFFX as "Suffix", PSKUNO as "Product_Nbr")AS XML_ROW FROM hbmofa.pricep

But what is displayed back is nothing but a list containing the same word repeated over and over again That word is

*POINTER

I tried to google this - but found nothing What am I doing wrong

On the same note - if anyone knows of any web pages that they can recommend for XML on the AS/400 - it would be appreciated
