Good morning all,

We finally received our HMC (7042-CR6). It already came with the latest firmware release, but now my question is what is the best way to connect it to my systems?

I see these ports on the back of the HMC (from left to right looking at the back of the machine):

* System Management Port
* Ethernet Port 3
* Ethernet Port 4
* Ethernet Port 1
* Ethernet Port 2

As it stands right now, the only port connected on the HMC is port #1 to our internal (open?) network.

Our current IBM i systems are inventory configured as such:

* Primary IBM i LINETH2/LINETH3 on network 10.160.200.x in server room #1 (8202-E4D)
* Development IBM i LINETH2 on network 10.160.200.x in server room #1 (8286-41A)
* Testing/Educational IBM i LINETH2 on the network 10.160.200.x in server room #1 (9406-520)
* DR IBM i LINETH/LINETH2 on network 10.160.200.x in server room #2 (in a physically different location, but connected through our fiber network) (8202-E4B)

My question is – what is the best way to configure the HMC? What I was thinking from an install perspective is something like this:

* Primary IBM i in server room #1
* Development IBM i in server room #1
* T/E IBM i in server room #1
* HMC in server room #1
* DR IBM i in server room #2

So with that being said I had a look at all four systems, and all four have HMC ports on them. In this case would this be correct?:
HMC - Ethernet #1 -> 8202-E4D - HMC port #1
HMC – Ethernet #2 -> 8286-41A – HMC port #1
HMC – Ethernet #3 -> Cisco 3850 #1 port 25 (private VLAN) -> (internal switching network) -> Cisco 3850 #3 port 25 (private VLAN) -> 9406-E4B – HMC port #1
HMC – Ethernet #4 -> Open

My testing/education system will remain off the HMC, but still accessible through OPS Con (which is what I do for all four servers right now anyhow).

So to put the HMC on an open (internal) network, I connect it to port #4, correct?

One other note – all four systems are currently accessible through OPS Con (each has it’s own service host IP address). Do I need to disable / remove this access once the HMC is running and connected to the systems, or if I leave it will it just be a redundant connection that is no longer required? Or should I just change the recovery/takeover console type option from 3 (Operations Console (LAN) to 4 (Hardware Management Console (HMC))?

And yes, I did read over the manuals for everything, but it’s not crystal clear on how to specifically connect a remote system (or maybe I wasn’t looking in the correct location).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thankee-sai!

/b;
