I recently (within the last month) had a program that was using RPGIV fixed
column model, but in reality was an RPGII program. I used RDI to convert to
free, but less than 1/2 of the program converted. Any line with a
conditioning indicator did not convert. Any line with a tag, did not
convert. The earlies date stamps were 1993 in the code. Lots of spaghetti
code making it very difficult to follow. User complained about the program
that for the last 5 years or so the program had ceased to handle certain
situations correctly. (My research indicates that the program has not been
modified since 2001). In looking at the code, it appeared that what she was
complaining about never worked correctly.

Rewriting this program from scratch using fully free. But it is a messy
program to grasp what is going on.

You may find that the conversion works, my experience has been different.

-"Before the application can be modernized, it is necessary that the trainee
can read, understand and fix bugs in the current application programs."

-Wouldn't it make more sense to do a straight conversion to RPG IV in
compatibility mode of the existing code? It is 100% compatible and doesn't
require the trainee to waste time learning -completely obsolete topics.
