Performance: _If_ the code was written by hand, and if it was I/O heavy, and _if_ the RPG programmer was unaware of where and when to use DS I/O then COBOL would probably be slightly faster.

But none of that applies as the code is generated by Synon. So the only way to tell is to test it in action.

At the end of the day, given that it is many years since Synon updated the product, it is really probably a wash.

There are two aspects of your question that can be answered though.

Parameter passing. Makes no difference - change a called RPG program to COBOL (or vice versa) and nothing changes.

Switching to ILE. BIG difference - or at least the potential for a big difference. RPG IV has a compatibility mode that allows RPG IV programs to run alongside RPG III with no effective difference. COBOL has no such option and the resulting changes in the COBOL run unit can have a significant difference particularly in a mixed environment. Making a complete switch to ILE COBOL should not present a problem but changing just a few programs would require careful testing.

Hi,

I was wondering whether there is a performance difference between RPG and
Cobol code trying to execute the same functionality which is I/O heavy
(rather than calculations).

I realize that a lot might depend on how the actual code is written, but is
there a general guideline?

My client uses Synon 2E (which allows you to generate OPM/ILE RPG/Cobol
source), and there are some programs which are currently OPM Cobol. We are
planning on regenerating them as ILE and we have a choice of doing either
RPG or Cobol. Is there any particular reason that we should choose one over
the other?

The plan is to change all the programs in the job stream to ILE just to
keep them in the same Activation Group.

These are common modules which are being called from a various RPG/Cobol
programs.

The programs accept a bunch of parameters. Are there any pitfalls if we
convert to ILE RPG in accepting the parameters?
