Scott - Many thanks for the chime in. I had actually found that same article in my travels. I have *ALLOBJ on the machine in question. I can indeed create a file in the directory. The weird thing to me is that while there is no .gitconfig file in the directory, there is a DIRECTORY called .gitconfig there. That seems odd. I'm not sure how it got there and I don't know if it's a problem or not. There's nothing in that directory. There's also a .git directory with a subdirectory under that called "refs". Under "refs" are two more subdirectories ("heads" and "tags"), both of which are empty.

The contents of my /home/TWRIGHT directory in total are as follows...

cd /home/TWRIGHT
$
ls -a
. .. .git .gitconfig .sh_history

Subject: Re: Git - Fatal Error

Tim,

Haven't run into this personally, but it means it's having some trouble reading the configuration files (obviously.) Very possibly an authority problem...

I did a quick Google search, and found this discussion that seems to concur:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__stackoverflow.com_questions_38070483_git-2Dfatal-2Dunknown-2Derror-2Doccured-2Dwhile-2Dreading-2Dthe-2Dconfiguration-2Dfiles&d=DwICAg&c=tjPg1sbLxZ1bjgTYa5hhdw&r=EYqaSP3Mgu07Ni8ySbJ3JNYnzhmXPsztURQOxFeoL1M06CP3HEZtQVfh2r4V_h0E&m=ubSZ_sPs-GQVlajotrYNKlngLvHPlg3vKwZhs_MoeIk&s=vJAL_okZuEPYTeJAH2YgnKgrckgR2wq-5hAFHLj1GyY&e=

You'll want to verify that the user's home directory exists, and the user has permissions to create a file in it. Check for a .gitconfig file in the home directory, and if found, verify that they have authority to read and change it.

Good luck!

I posted this on the Open Source Roundtable thread, but not sure if it will get to the right people for feedback there. So - here goes...

I sure hope someone can guide me on this.
We are at V7R3 and I have the open source feature set installed.
I go into QP2TERM and issue "git version".
Git responds with "git version 2.10.2". So far, so good.
I issue pretty much ANY other Got command like "config" or "init" and Git comes back with, "fatal: unknown error occurred while reading the configuration files".

I'm not sure where to start looking for an answer for this, but I'm dead in the water. Any pointers out there for me?
