There are two ways to look at overloading. One way is from the developer
who consumes the function. The other is from the developer who writes the
function. The developer who writes the function has to dabble in the
nerds playground, as you call it. The developer who consumes the function
enjoys the ease of use.

Did you look at idate as recommended?
I can use this as idate(:fromdate) and based on the size and type of the
field entered it will return a date field. For example, if you pass it a
7 digit number it assumes you are going from CYYMMDD, if you pass it an 8
digit number it assumes CCYYMMDD and so on and so forth. It has an
optional second parameter in case you do weird things like store your
dates in 8 digit numbers as MMCCDDYY and you need to tell it.

This makes it quite simple for the consumer.
