Without it, how does the system know which JDK to use?
</snip>

I am no Java guru so it's hard for me to say. I suspect it could vary by
application, at least based on my experience with Domino.
...
Hey, dude, you should have went one link further. I opened up the link
you gave. Then I clicked on "How to determine what Java Development Kits
(JDKs) are installed and use them in your environment?"
It has this section called:
"IBM i OS default JDKs - this is the JDK used if the JAVA_HOME environment
is not configured system-wide or at the job scope. "
And it also has some really cool other stuff in it.

That being said, it says the default JVM for 7.3 would be IT4J 8.0 32 bit.
However, many jobs seem to override that. For example IBM i Navigator
job ADMIN2:
Cause . . . . . : JAVA_HOME environment variable is
/QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/JavaVM/jdk71/64bit

WRKENVVAR LEVEL(*SYS)
is blank

There is a job environment variable JAVA_HOME but I do not know where/how
that got set. It wasn't in the first level of the two stream files
mention in these joblog entries
JVM properties were loaded from a properties file.:
/QIBM/ProdData/OS400/Navigator/appdata/navigator.jvm.options
JVM properties were loaded from a properties file.:
/QIBM/UserData/Java400/SystemDefault.properties

Some jobs in WRKJVMJOB are 1.7, some 1.8. If they do not have a JAVA_HOME
environment variable in the job it uses 1.8. So that part of the
'default' rings true.
