But if they are using a self signed cert, how do you KNOW you are connecting to www.amazon.com? How do you know the DNS wasn't hacked and you are being redirected to some other server with a self signed cert reporting www.amazon.com? Anyone can create a self signed cert for Amazon.com. It is the CA's certification of Amazon's certificate that lets you know that you are in the right place.
