Update:
i just checked the server config again and found:
VIOS1 has its file pool on a SVC based SAN
VIOS2 has its file pool on an iSCSI based external storage
(ok, iSCSI for IBM i is not that recommended, but it works...)

reconfigured VIOS2 to host its file pools on a different SAN: voila, mirror works!

So i assume IBM i does some checking with VIOS on what type of storage is being used.

Now - to complete the tests - i am going to test VIOS1/iSCSI mirroring to VIOS2/iSCSI.
