As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Yeah, well, I wanted to comment on the choices OP already mentioned
for himself first. Once I did that, I saw my post was already getting
on the long side and I decided to see if he responded, and how this
thread developed, before bombarding him with more.
I've used it on the i to communicate with a web service and it could not have been easier.
I am very pleased that you have had good experiences with Python on
the i. It's nice to hear from other people who are using it and being
productive with it, rather than just listening to the sound of my own
voice extolling its virtues. ;)
