The best is for every device to have its own valid IP and not depend on NAT or relays. If a light bulb has connectivity to Internet, and its own address, it should have a simplified TCP IP stack that only allows to turn it on, off, dim, eventually change colors, but the light bulb should not be able to send mail.

I'm not so sure about relays going away and everything going straight to the cloud. How would they handle those multifunction copier/printer/scanners? Those need to relay through something.
