On your slow transmission, did you check your CHGTCPA buffer sizes? Huge
thing. Freaking huge thing. Before this I seriously think I could have
received them via FedEx faster.
It will still take some time. I don't have a record of our last download
but I suspect our internet connection and yours are vastly different.
Very recently I was on a phone call with IBM and they were recommending
the option 8 as the preferred method but could give me zero explanation
why.
My preference is that I can copy and paste the INSPTF command and I don't
have to remember to change any option on option 8, like delayed, etc.
Sort of like I would prefer http://myibmi:2001/MySpoolFiles vs
http://myibmi:2001 expand this, expand that, click this, click that.

Thanks, Rob. Just a couple of questions.
1) Is the FTP download always slow? I mean it took several hours.
2) I have everything staged to apply the PTFs later today and then IPL
tomorrow night. Normally I use the INSPTF command when doing other
groups,
but because of the size of this was going to use GO PTF option 8. Is
there
any advantage (or difference) to using one over the other? It will be
*DLYALL in either case.
Thanks.

When I order the cumes and groups I order them from Fix Central and
request the FTP method. This sends me an email with even a suggested
script as part of the email:
<snip>
o DOWNLOAD USING THE FTP COMMAND FROM OS/400
Select this method only if you will be using image catalogs.
In the example below, the directory is named "fixes".
You must store the files in a path within the "root" (/)
directory in IFS.
ftp "delivery01-bld.dhe.ibm.com"
ftp> Name: "anonymous"
ftp> Password: g3O04fsH
ftp> namefmt 1
ftp> lcd /fixes
ftp> ascii
ftp> cd /ccss/B60803/CUME/C
ftp> get ftpCUME.txt
ftp> get ilstCUME.txt
ftp> binary
ftp> get CUME_1.bin
ftp> get CUME_2.bin
ftp> get CUME_3.bin
ftp> get CUME_4.bin
ftp> get CUME_5.bin
ftp> quit
</snip>
I modify this only slightly
- add the locsite to avoid the error
- Use mget's instead of gets to make them more generic
- They don't check the password on anonymous so you can ignore the one
they supply. If you've ever worked with users you know that it's
to tell them something like g3O04fsH then to tell them to just makewouldn't
something up.
ftp "delivery01-bld.dhe.ibm.com"
ftp> Name: "anonymous"
ftp> Password: myemailaddress
ftp> locsite namefmt 1
ftp> lcd /fixes my image catalog directory
ftp> ascii
ftp> cd /ccss/B60803/CUME/C
ftp> mget *.txt
ftp> binary
ftp> mget *.bin
ftp> quit
When that is done
CALL PGM(QVOIFIMG) PARM('CUME ' '*ALL ' 0)
LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME) DEV(OPTVRT01)
VFYIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME) TYPE(*PTF) SORT(*YES)
INSPTF LICPGM((*ALL)) DEV(OPTVRT01) INSTYP(*DLYALL)
There are a few tweaks I do different because I am a multi lpar shop but
since you are not I left those off for simplification.

I use Fix Central to download the latest cume (because SNDPTFORD
work) to my PC. Can I just copy/paste the .bin files from there to thelist
image catalog folder on the IBM i? And then install from there?
Thanks.
