It's starting to happen already. I have a couple of customers where the
storage would easily fit inside the CEC of a POWER 8 but they chose to go
with the V3700 instead, and move the Intel system storage there too.
The big roadblock to doing that is VIOS. It's hard to get your arms around
at first but once you figure it out it's not really that hard. Plus new
versions of the HMC make 90% of what you need to do in VIOS available via
the GUI. Now I prefer the command line (mainly because you can script a lot
of what needs to be done) but then again I'm old. The biggest rub against
VIOS is it's yet another OS that has to be maintained and updated and it
adds some level of complexity to the recovery planning.
It's for those reasons Agile has invested in SAN/Fibre/NPIV capable
switches/etc. so our technicians learn on our equipment, not the customers.
I think SAN in spite of the extra cost is where the lion share of newer
installations will be heading. And to another's point the SAN would use
SSD type storage.

I'm waiting on whether or not SAN disk will really take off in the SMB IBM i
environment.
Even in those shops with SAN storage already in use for their Windows
servers.
