Yes love this method, DLYJOB is so 'fixed' :-) Also used to request statistics and such from the job in addition to shutting down for example.

We would pair a data area with the data queue and the data area was the
object we would lock to know there was a process reading the queue entries. Any job that needed the queue processor running would attempt to lock the dtaara at startup and if it could get a lock initiated the processing program. If it couldn't get the lock it knew the processor was up and running. Just one way to handle that of course and this particular method doesn't work if you want multiple jobs processing the same queue.

I user data queues as an alternate to DLYJOB at times. When you use a
data queue, you can interrupt a wait by just posting an entry to the data
queue. So, if you have a long delay time, but you want to be able to shut
it down cleanly in the middle of a wait, using a data queue does the
trick.

You don't have to lose the audit trail, you can log anything you wan in both the sending and receiving applications. If you use service programs, you can wrap the put and get calls in a sub-procedure to do the logging for you, and call that from your programs.
