Just to clarify,
If your Windows developers could do something like this:

select ...
from ...
FOR READ ONLY

Then you could probably get by with *USE. However the default on the
SELECT statement is not 'for read only'. Which generally doesn't make
sense but they can't change the default or lines of code which use a
cursor and then do:
update ...
where current of CURSOR1
would blow up.
