I understand what it does but everything that VCP can do HMC can do better. Since you have access to the HMC that gives you everything VCP can do AND it works even if the server is powered off. VCP goes away once LIC is down. You can have both working of course but depending on how the server is cabled it could be a pain to make it work for no gain.

Got me. The IBM BP installed the new system and there is an HMC that we
don't use very much.

I use it for the system console. I figured I should have the virtual
control panel working as well before I upgrade one of the partitions.

We have an 8202-E4D. We can connect to the HMC via web browser, and we
can
start a system console for any of the partitions with IBM i ACS.

I'm trying to use the virtual control panel. When I click the advanced
button under HMC 5250 console. I'm asked for a user Id and then I guess
I'm
supposed to click Connect and Browse. It always says it can't connect.

Is there anything else I need to do, perhaps change the partition settings
in the HMC?

I am trying to get virtual control panel access before upgrading a
partition to V7R3
