Subject: RE: PTF Apply on 5.4 box

Run this first
DLTPTF PTF(*ALL)
Note: There's a difference between DLTPTF and RMVPTF. RMVPTF will remove a PTF that is temporarily applied but does nothing to the downloaded save files, cover letters, etc. DLTPTF doesn't affect the status of a temporarily applied ptf but will delete the cover letters, downloaded save files, etc. And, DLTPTF will clean up these objects for all ptf's, applied or otherwise.

If not, there will be other things you'll miss. For example WRKLNK '/QSYS.LIB/QGPL.LIB/QAPZCOVER.FILE/*.MBR'
I used the WRKLNK command because most of my lpars do not have PDM loaded.
And then there are the files which contain the information of which PTF's are in 'save file only' and what not. You really don't think they scan your system for save files to know this, eh? Hint: Do a DSPPTF and then Sys-Req, 3, 14 and see the open files. Do not mess with these. QAPZCOVER is fair game (after the DLTPTF) but leave the others alone.

After the DLTPTF then hunt away.

I have some lpars which have been around for a few decades. These had some really old PTF remnents from my failure to permanently apply, and DLTPTF, stuff during the many upgrades they have underwent and I did have to do a bit of manual cleanup. One reason I'm a bit more dedicated to permenently applying, and deleting, prior to an upgrade.

Some cleanup.

There are still 433 QMF... and QSI... Save Files in QGPL.

I did a dump of all PTF's on the system and compared them to the Savf's.

Most are Permanently Applied or Superseded.

There are 62 that only exist as a SavF. (No corresponding PTF on the
system)
There are 92 that have a PTF status of Save file only.

Being I did an APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES) and did an IPL
yesterday, is it safe to just delete all these PTF SavF?

There are NO PTF's Temporarily applied.

There was some old code from freeware that I replaced with DBU.

Had to do a couple vendor updates to make 7.1 compliant.

I had a handful of internal pgm's that I rewrote anyway because of design.
Other than those it looks good.

I also recommend the IPL, but why is only mildly related.
Prior to upgrading (assuming you are not running Domino on this machine) I
would do an APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES) This will set all
your IBM i V5R4 PTF's to be permanently applied prior to upgrading to 7.1.

This cleans up some old ptf backup save files.

See:
Permanently apply program temporary fixes (PTFs) that are temporarily
applied on your system if you have not already done so.

It's in the upgrade section.

Option 8 won't do well if they are in *SAVFs.

I would do LODPTF for the two and select *SAVF. It will take two LODPTFs
one for each of them but you can then do APYPTF for both together.

Weather they are *IMMED or *Delayed is up to the specific PTF but I
would normally want an IPL in there anyway so do them both as delayed
and then IPL.

There are a couple of PTF's I need to install like SI50015 and MF56994.
They are currently in a SAVF in QGPL.

Is it GO PTF Opt 2 to apply them delayed or option 8?
