There is no 0x8E in ASCII. ASCII is 7-bit and has a range of 0x00 to 0x7F.

So just be aware that this hack of using 0x8E to conver to EBCDIC 0x0A is
not foolproof or completely portable.

Very true. Which is why I passed it on to the customer on a "this may or may not work" basis.

Thankfully, this is the only customer attempting to do this.
