More than 'Appears' it's stated everywhere that Power8 machines require HMC version 8. AND current Power8 firmware requires HMC 8.8.4.0 or newer.

Also as you stated HMC Version 8 does NOT support Power5 servers. So you will need to maintain two HMCs in that situation or convert the Power5 to LAN console and HMCfree for it's duration.

If the vendor did a FSP reset, HMC should ask to update password,
so you can set one for user HMC.
