Diego,

I am a little hesitant to do this.
We have our host name and domain set up and we are using *remote and then
the IP addresses for our network DNS servers.

Perhaps I will give this a shot at some time in the future.

Paul

Paul,

Sorry, I didn't mean you to disable your DNS, but your DNS configuration :

CFGTCP -> Option 12 -> Removing IP Address

Sometimes you need to put:

CFGTCP -> Option 12 -> Domain and hostname and *LOCAL Then CFGTCP -> Option
10-> Add the Fully Qualified Domain Name to your host table
(hostname.domain)

Diego,

I am uncertain how best to answer.
DNS is not running on our IBM i.

"Is your DNS configured correctly?"
->Can you be more specific? We have 2 DNS Servers on our network neither
of which is the IBM i. We have both DNS addresses specified on our TCP
domain configuration.

"How fast is your DNS?"
->Not sure how to determine this.

"Have you tried disabling DNS?"
-> No, DNS is not running on the IBM i

"Have you tried to increase buffer size to 1 MB?"
-> I have not, I suppose I could give this a shot. Currently at 65536.

Well, I know that using CHGTCPA to change these:
TCP receive buffer size . . . . 65536
TCP send buffer size . . . . . . 65536
REALLY helped FTP. Significantly. Enormously. Like WOW!

Thanks Brad,
I, too, thought that netserver might be the issue.
Since we also have sluggish response with HTTP interfaces as well (with
iNav and HTTP Admin), I was wondering if there wasn't a configuration issue
that might be limiting data throughput.
(disclaimer: I am not a network person. )

I think it has something to do with netserver... I've had this problem
since
V5R4 and it's still there on V7R3. Better, but not great (more likely due
to newer faster hardware).

Sometimes I can right click on a file and open it (with something like
notepad++), other times it takes a few seconds before the open with
notepad++prompt
appears.

When deleting one file, it seems to take forever, but when deleting more
than one, it seems to go quicker.

When editing an IFS file, "save as" seems to take 10 seconds or so before
giving a dialogue to save the file... but "save" seems to be instantaneous.

I hope these are along the same lines as the problem you're having.. I've
just put up with it for now... I hope to hear an answer as well.

I seem to have a very bad performance issue between the IBM I and my
network when working with files in the IFS and applications on my PC.

We are on IBM I V7R2.

I have an excel .xml file called mytest3.xml (literally, that is the
file name). The file is 17k and has about a dozen rows and columns.

When I open the excel file from the IFS the file takes about a minute
to load (using MS Excel).

When I take the IFS file and move it to the network, the file opens
instantaneously. (Note that moving the file from the IFS to the
network using File Explorer is instantaneous).

.I have often thought that network, and also HTTP interactions, with
our IBM I have been slow, but have never been able to pin it down.

The Excel experiment above seems to highlight the issue.

The question is, what approach can I take to try address this issue?

How can I investigate the problem?

Any help appreciated.
