As Doug said, tuning based on workload.
Our erp lpars have QBATCH and QINTER. Our Domino lpars run out of QBASE
and each domino server has it's own subsystem.

I assume this is a discussion about Logical Partitioning (and not DATABASE
Partitioning)?

Another reason is to separate different workloads with different
characteristics - and tuning those differently to optimize for that
workload. An example is moving a query/BI/Data warehouse workload to its
own Logical Partition where I might index, parallelize, and aggregate the
data in that partition vs. doing any of that in the production partition.

What are some cases where partitioning the IBM i is most beneficial,
or
needed?

Creating a separate test system is one reason. Another reason
is
high-availability (HA). Meaning, in our case, we have two boxes and
partitioned them both. The primary production system is on one box and

its HA image on the other box. Then we have our primary development
(test) system on the opposite box from the primary production system
with
the development HA image on the primary production box.

Oh, forgot to mention that we have the HA box 50 miles away for
disaster recovery purposes, too.
