Creating a separate test system is one reason. Another reason

is

high-availability (HA). Meaning, in our case, we have two boxes and
partitioned them both. The primary production system is on one box and

its HA image on the other box. Then we have our primary development
(test) system on the opposite box from the primary production system

with

the development HA image on the primary production box.

Oh, forgot to mention that we have the HA box 50 miles away for
disaster recovery purposes, too.
