Python 2.7 is actually being delivered in Option 4 (we have a typo on
developerWorks, thanks timmr :) ). It's also not yet available (well the
option is on the install media, but it's currently empty until we finish
testing and approve the PTFs for support). Option 2 is out and just got a
new update to be built with GCC instead of XLC, which should make it
easier to install extensions with C code in them.

Also, I'll be presenting a couple Python presentation at COMMON in May as
well as a Python lab.

Python is now being delivered and packaged for IBM i. It is
available through both options 2 and 5 of 5733-OPS (Open Source for
IBM i). Option 2 contains the Python 3.4 runtime, which installs to
the directory /QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/OPS/Python3.4 while Option 5
contains the Python 2.7 runtime, installed in /QOpenSys/QIBM/
ProdData/OPS/Python2.7.

Given those things, any Python code you write for the i (at least for
quite a while) will be run using iSeriesPython. And that is an
implementation of Python 2.7, with little or no prospect of ever
having a 3.x version.

Well except for the part about them already delivering Python 3.0 today.

:-) 5733-OPS Option 2. Just install it, it's FREE!!!
