And ironically enough, I don't have any S/36 programs. They're all RPGLE and SQLRPGLE, with a mix of fixed and free code.

I do not believe that SQL supports the multiformat join logical file. What the multiformat join logical gives you is the ability to break your tables apart yet still present them to your old S/36 type programs as one file (at least for read).
