It mentions creating a .profile file in the user's home directory - of course, that means that the home directory is not root!

Your home directory shouldn't be root. The default is /home/USERID.


It speaks of this in reference to QShell, so I'm not sure about how it applies elsewhere.

Yes, it should work wherever you start a JVM.
