I normally check for HIPER and other PTFs every Friday. It seems
strange to me to have a freeze period for the next 7 weeks. If it
was me, I'd want to make sure I had the latest fixes.

Two questions:
1. Is there an IBM recommended practice on this?
2. What strategy are you using?

I have heard of employing that strategy, as a means to help identify what is the origin for any changes in operation\performance; the hdw vs the sfw.

Holding the software in stasis over a period preceding the hardware change can give better assurance that changes [for better or for worse] were due to the change in hardware. IIRC, that particular transition comes with a required re-translation, so that hardware change is an implicit software change, at least for the applications.?
