Ah, OK. And then you mention you also had some issues that might be
related to the size of the directory.
Well, I can only say that most ways of listing the contents of that
directory are probably as susceptible to size issues as anything else.
I mean, there may well be tools that, just by their nature, pick up
one or a small number of names at a time, keeping their "footprint"
small. I don't know which tools do this and which don't. I've never
been anywhere near working with too many files.
In your shoes, I'd just have to experiment and flail around. My first
experiment would be seeing if "ls -l" (in Qshell or PASE) works on
that directory without bombing. If it does, then you are at least
halfway home.
