The i5/OS license will cost more than the hardware.
Then there is also the entitlement fee.

We're not there yet, Rob (Couch). Can't build your own machine. IBM has taken steps in that direction. IBM sold their Power chip manufacturing, and founded the OpenPower consortium. Several members have license to build Power-based servers. TYAN is one.

The next logical step would be for IBM to allow OpenPower OEMS to license IBM i, and bundle it with their servers. But I haven't heard much about that.
