Charles,
Did you get an answer yet? Have had similar issues with other HP printers.
Check this doc on snmp descriptions
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1019572
and if you get it working, let us know what worked.

Also, not reflected in the above article, if the printer is using SNMPv3
check this article for required setup to enable v3 (this doesn't talk about
printers specifically, but some of the HP docs reference v3 (whether this is
configurable or not I don't know)...

HP has updated firmware for M401

Subject: HP 400 M401n printer with SNMP driver

All,

Trying to set up a new HP 401dn printer as a 3812 *PAN printer using the
SNMP driver.

Per this doc, it should work:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1019534

But when I start the writer, I get
CPD401A - Could not establish SNMP communications with device

Cause . . . . . : Was not able to establish SNMP communications with
device
PRTAPCKML. The reason code is 1. The reason codes and their meanings are
as follows: 1 - The device appears to be an SNMP device but not a printer.

SNMP community name is just the default of public.

PJL Driver works...but I'd really like to use SNMP... I just can't seem to
ever get it to work.

Anybody have any ideas?
Charles
