That response had me about bursting out with exasperation.
Long column names like Quantity_Available are more cryptic than IIMQTA?

NO, but those long field names aren't visible to native RLA applications, and the GENERATED 10-CHARACTER field names they yield (e.g., your example would probably be "QUANT00001" to an application that uses native RLA) most certainly ARE cryptic.
