In the MSDN (Microsoft's technical documentation), If I was looking at e.g

On the IBM i, I don't see a simple 2-click (1. expand the popup. 2. click
the version link) way of doing that. Its annoying because google often
leads me to the v5.4 docs, and I'm usually dealing with v7.1 or v7.2
systems. Also, as a consultant, I will likely be dealing with multiple
different versions.

Is this an annoyance I have to live with, or am I not seeing a navigation
icon?

When I had to support multiple versions, I'd open multiple browser tabs.
I bookmark the Knowledge Center rather than rely on Google's ability to
guess which version I'm interested in :-) Having said that, the ability
to jump between versions /for the same topic/ sounds quite useful.
Suggest that to IBM by using the Feedback link at the very bottom of any
Knowledge Center page.
