Getting the tape out is all gonna depend on where it Jammed. Getting
the robot assembly off the front is quite simple, lift it about 1/2
inch and turn slightly and it will hinge away so you can disconect the
cables from the control panel. Then lift it up and off. That will get
you access to the front of the drive. At that point you may be able
to see the tape or it may be further inside.

Replacing it is quite easy, one SCSI cable and power and it's likely
on a roll out shelf that will hold a bus. Just a couple screws as I
recall secure it to that shelf. Lifting it off is easy, I do it myself
once the robot/loader is off, but help from a friend wouldn't be a bad
idea if you're not comfortable with more than 50 lbs of drive. It's
quite long and 1/2 rack width wide.

Any hope may have been dashed. Since drive is not under
maintenance, my
service request has been sent to entitlement. I did receive an email,
with
some reluctance, stating an amount that needed to be encumbered. Once
that
has been done, the ticket goes to SSR. Either price is cheaper
than the
amount requested. I can't even find out from IBM is the 3590 E11 is
considered a customer replaceable component.

For now at least, I would be mildly satisfied just to know how to
properly
open the front up to see where the cartridge is jammed and and how
to get
it out. Only a guess at this point, but it would seem that the
cartridge
itself is currently undamaged, since the error appeared following a
message
indicating cartridge was being transferred.

On the "good" side (isn't really one), I avoided four weeks in a row of
failed Go SAVE 21.

Yesterday, I wrote backed up a number of libraries to the jammed 3590
cartridge, and deleted them. This morning, I performed an IPL, which
lowered maximum unprotect from 20G to 5G, and %system ASP use from
67 to
65. Might not have needed the second tape.

I sent an email to my boss. No idea if my emails make it past the spam
filter. A previously assigned boss contacted me after he saw my
email in
the spam folder. Why in the world would somebody set up a spam filter
rule
that rejected email from people within the company domain? My new
supervisor, who never contacted me and I never contacted before. I
don't
get that.

Any WAG as to how heavy a 3590 E11 is?

Came in this morning and power cycled the 3590. Did self test.
Think I
heard activity from tape movement mechanism. Not sure as computer
room
is
noisy.

Panel returned to display "MOVE ERROR" and cartridge is still inside.

Called IBM. No outward laughter. I learned that the 3590 is
considered
an
external device. Not under maintenance. So, I was sent to
entitlement.
A
preliminary estimate for service is 4,700.

Questions:

1) Is the 3590 E11 considered a device that customer can replace?

2) If so, are there any suggestions as to where to puchase one and
what
an
appropriate price might be?

3) If customer replacaeble, is there a procedure to be followed?

4) Whether customer replaceable or not, is anybody interested in
coming
to
Topeka - assuming for less than IBM wants for service? If so, can an
estimate be given? For this, you can contact me off list.

The 520 still has no drop dead date assigned. Could be three months.
Could be longer. We do have IBM hardware maintenance until end of
year
on
the 520 itself.

I have looked at a few 3590 drives. Ours has a little panel on top with
ACF on it. I wasn't sure if that made a difference in getting the front
off. Also, lift up I understand. But, I wonder about "turn slightly".
That may be obvious once I look at the drive, but, right now, I am
unsure as to which direction it is turned.
