I'd like to reiterate what I believe was the *main* point Charles was
trying to make, which is that there is no substitute for actual
printed output when it comes to developing and testing anything that
is ultimately meant to be printed. In particular, if you are using
AFPDS in the first place, most likely the appearance matters; and as
such, the ***ONLY*** reliable way to find out what it looks like is to
actually print it out.

That said, conversion to PDF is likely to be ***LESS BAD*** than other
preview options. (But in my experience, it is very often still
extremely bad.)

Charles, does this conversion happen after the spool file is created? At
v7.1, is this conversion built into the OS? Or is there some programming
required to accomplish this?

Conversion of AFPDS spooled files to PDF is a no-cost option at 7.1
(and is available for 6.1 as well). It needs to be installed, but once
installed, you can either copy an existing spooled file to a PDF, or
you can just "print" straight to PDF with the proper printer override:

Note that I don't have personal experience with these because they are
not installed on our system.
